Hero described a type of steam engine 2000 years ago. My grandfather built one 100 years ago and I now have it working and built a new one as well. Details of construction are described in my YouTube playlist on Boxford engineers lathes. My model of Hero's steam engine successfully lifted a weight with a small crane and this has not been done in modern times. see http://www.HeroSteamEngine.com. This lecture goes on to describe all the major development in the 17th to 19th centuries including the inventions of Savory, Newcomen, Trevithic, Watt, and Stevensen amongst others. I have used a large number of short video clips and graphics to illustrate how these machines worked. Some of these have been provided by various web sites but only represent a tiny part of each person's work. This was intended for private showing, but in view of the Corona virus isolation requirements I decided to put it online. The lecture was originally presented in Thames, New Zealand which was the site of a gold rush in 1867 (KaeLewis.com) resulting in establishment of a foundry for casting metal machinery for gold mining and later locomotives and machinery for other industries. Some discussion of steel processing and casting is included. There is a video of a large reconstructed quartz stamper battery in operation. Steam Punk is also big in Thames and the lecture ends with a couple of Steam Punk images. It also includes a description of the steam indicator which is an instrument my grandfather used to measure the horsepower and efficiency of steam engines in the early 20th century. There is a separate YouTube video in my channel describing the steam indicator. A series of YouTube videos show how to use an engineers lathe to build a Hero's steam engine. HeroSteamEngine.com shows that Hero's engine could lift weight which allowed calculation of power and efficiency of the engine. Patreon: Consider supporting this channel on Patreon: / evanecent
