As part of our best snorkeling Big Island guide we visited one of our regular spots Kailua Bay. This beach is located in the heart of downtown Kona just off of the King Kamehameha Hotel next to the pier. There's parking nearby and it requires a bit of a walk to get here but once you arrive you'll be rewarded with a secluded little cove that is often very calm and makes for a good chillax spot. This beach is excellent for families with young kids. The snorkeling here is good. Once you swim out a bit the visibility will improve. If you follow the swim lane the bottom will gently slope to about 40 feet 1 mile out. If you stay near the pier there are generous sand patches with schools of fish and patches of reef. If you're lucky you may encounter a school of akule which form massive tight bait balls that are fun to swim through. The snorkeling here is about a 7/10.
