Delafosse was contracted to make 10 rolls for Hupfeld in August 1906 - as was normal, part of his contract was that he provided an endorsement letter. The signature on that letter (seen here from the Leipzig state archive) was reproduced in facsimile on the roll labels. The contract allowed him to select what he recorded, and the letter tells us the day when he made the recordings. Here, he plays Percy Grainger's 'Paraphrase on Tchaikovsky's Flower Waltz', which was dedicated 'For Leon Delafosse in admiration and friendship'. The work was first heard in Grainger's debut solo recital in 1901, and published in 1904 after some revision. This was Grainger's first such paraphrase, and started his use of English for the musical descriptions as well as for the title. Grainger recorded it himself, both on piano roll for Aeolian's Duo-Art system and on disc - in 1918, 12 years after this Delafosse roll. Where he played it much faster than than this roll, which follows Hupfeld's tempo marking. Played on a Gotha Steck grand Pianola-Piano. Pianolist Julian Dyer.
