PATAGONIA Day 23: El Calafate and the Perito Moreno Glacier

After spending 3 weeks hiking through the mountains of Patagonia in both Chile and Argentina, I decided to do something touristy: I took an all-day boat tour and hike of the Perito Moreno glacier near El Calafate, Argentina. The cruise took us across Lago Argentino where we admired the 100 meter high walls of the Perito Moreno glacier extending into the lake. On the opposite shore, we hiked over land for 2-3 hours in high winds and freezing rain as our tour guide explained various features of the glacier and its past, present, and future behavior. After taking our photo ops inside crevasses and atop a high vantage point on the hill, we hiked back to the boat and enjoyed a few glasses of calafate (a local relative of the huckleberry) liquor.
