I began to realize that we often fear death, because we fear losing control of what we’ve gained in this life. For, me, it was missing the opportunity to be a present and dedicated father to my kids. It can look different for each of us. Watching Paul’s wrestle between life and death is extremely helpful for us as believers. In Philippians 1:21-25, he writes, “For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. If I am to live in the flesh, that means fruitful labor for me. Yet which I shall choose I cannot tell. I am hard pressed between the two. My DESIRE is to depart and be with Christ, for that is FAR better. But to remain in the flesh is more necessary on your account. Convinced of this, I know that I will remain and continue with you all, for your progress and joy in the faith.” Paul knew he was a citizen of another kingdom (Phil. 3:20) who would one day dwell with God forever. He had a vision for eternity that drove him to live a life of massive kingdom fruitfulness. He wanted to take as many people as possible with him to that place of unparalleled glory.
