We are delighted to have Jason O’Shaughnessy and John McLaughin of CCAE (Cork Centre for Architectural Education) hosting Current. Up first they have Kieran Cremin, a PHD student of design presenting some of his work in a talk called "Haunted Space: Para-cartographic tracks in Cormac McCarthy’s Blood Meridian." “This ‘Architecture by Design’ doctoral research explores Cormac McCarthy’s enigmatic literary work Blood Meridian through the design approach of the architect. The current focus of the research considers certain spatial aspects of the novel in relation to distinct phenomena in the American landscape. This presentation will outline the early stages of the research - which operates in the mode of a ‘tracker’ (or proto-detective) – and ‘tills’ McCarthy’s novel for spatial clues. During this developmental phase, the work is moving between textual and visual registers to form new understandings and translations of distinct psycho-spatial settings – foregrounding the idea of ‘rim’ as a distinct type of paranoid- horizon-condition that is particular to the American frontier terrain.” Following Kieran, Jack Lehane, another PHD student, will give a talk about his research into alternate forms of architectural education entitled "Participation on the Fringe: New Spatial Agencies for Live Projects” “New opportunities for architecture education are opening up in the world, including a new model of international live project that offers ‘hands-on’ architecture education independent of university structures. However, this space is under-represented due to its recent and decentralised nature. Drawing on real-world participation in initiatives in Lebanon, Fiji and Nepal, I provide an introductory insight into their built projects — as part of ongoing research that maps stakeholder participation in this context to inform future projects of the same type.” CCAE Socials / ucc_archsoc / ucc / cit_ie https://www.instagram.com/ucc_archsoc... CURRENT Socials Instagram: / current_ire. . Twitter: / current_ireland You can tune into the live recording of these shows on Monday/Wednesday/Friday from 1-2pm (Irish time) via zoom: https://ucd-ie.zoom.us/j/85946920172p... Current is a project originating in UCD and involving architecture schools across Ireland. This regular ‘zoomcast’ will present features on what the faculty, staff and students are up to – in projects, in practice and in research – and on what is current. We will ask invited guests to share their enthusiasms – favorite books, pictures, places visited – and will explore themes and issues relevant to contemporary architecture. As long as we cannot all be in the same place at the same time, Current is intended to provide ‘a shared stream of thought’ through which the culture of architectural education can be sustained. Between us, the schools will produce a number of programs each week, typically running from 1-2pm. The series will initially run till mid-December. All are welcome to join, ask questions, and become part of the conversation.
