[Internal articulation and indirect attack - how to practice piano technique efficiently] But often the results are not satisfactory - some students simply fail to relax enough while playing. So I began to reflect about how it works for me. I came to the conclusion that the relaxation starts here - in the area of the solar plexus. I feel like I’m expanding my solar plexus, as if I’m filling it with air, and I have this sensation when I am both inhaling and exhaling. Then the relaxation goes up to the nape of the neck, flows freely through the shoulders and arms to the hands, and all the weight is concentrated in the tips of the fingers. In practice, the entire Motor Apparatus relaxes simultaneously: starting from the center in the solar plexus, through the shoulders and hands to the tips of the fingers, and their combined weight goes down, directly to the bottom of the keyboard. • Chopin - Polonaise in A-flat major op. 53 ... [Chopin - Polonaise in A-flat major op. 53] A few words of clarification: Of course, relaxation is relative, because, after all, the muscles must work. But why be distracted when playing by thinking to relax many different points of the Motor Apparatus, when it is enough to think of one single point - the solar plexus? Or, actually, not even continuously thinking about it. It is enough to IMAGINE it or rather to FEEL it. Thanks to this, instead of disperse some part of our attention to the relaxation of several individual points, we can concentrate on the rendition, the sound and the music! That means that this one control point, the solar plexus, stimulates only the necessary muscles and they are working while all the others can rest relaxed. What is more, feeling the solar plexus has also a positive effect on proper breathing, which is also very important, because many students upset their breathing while playing! TO RESUME: Such a central, general relaxation flowing from the solar plexus radiates throughout the whole organism and has many positive effects, such as SOUND QUALITY, TECHNIQUE EFFICIENCY, mastering STAGE FRIGHT, preventing MEMORY SLIPS, and, if we go beyond purely pianistic effects, even facilitating FALLING ASLEEP.
