During the "La Fiesta de Los Reyes Magos" (festival of the Three Wise Men) held in Macaracas, Los Santos, Panama in January each year a junta embarre is held to construct a house for the town's poorest residents. A junta embarre is a social tradition of the Panamanian campesinos where a community comes together to complete a task, anything from planting a crop to constructing a house, any other large task. One of the most traditional examples of the junta embarre, and one that is still practiced today in many parts of panama is the construction of a house, Casa de Quincha (traditional adobe home), for a newly married couple. People from the local community gather to build the house from materials found locally such as mud and straw, while drinking a considerable amount of seco herano or chirrisco (typical drinks of Panama). While the men generally take care of the construction and the drinking, the women prepare a huge pot of sancocho (a typical Panamanian chicken soup) with arroz con puerco (rice and fried pork ). While the work is being done everybody is singing to make the day more like a celebration than a day's labor. Once the work is done and soup consumed the newlyweds are presented with their new home. These days the junta embarre a less common and usually happens as an event forming part of local festivals. Produced by "Joe On The Go" for ComoVaLaVaina.TV
