Sir William Walton (1902-1983) wrote this sublime piece in 1938 for a wedding, and what a wedding gift it must have been to receive. It sets text out of the Song of Solomon for an unaccompanied choir with short solo parts for tenor and treble. The text is directly from the King James Version of the Bible: Set me as a seal upon thine heart, as a seal upon thine arm: for love is strong as death. Many waters cannot quench love, neither can the floods drown it. Walton wraps the first part of the text back around, ending with "for love is strong as death" and I will always have very profound memories of conducting the piece in church on a Sunday when a very clearly weakened woman came in, surrounded by family. Without being told, I knew that she had wanted to go to church one last time and indeed she died within the week. I hope that some comfort was received by hearing the message that "love is strong as death."
