Design work for the Giulia Tubulare Zagato began in 1959, initially as a successor to the SZ model. Chief designer Giuseppe Busso had the idea for a 1.5 liter lightweight sportscar as early as 1955, but the SZ took precedent at the time. After convincing Alfa Romeo's president that it was time to take racing seriously again, ex Ferrari designer Carlo Chiti was hired to manage the project. This was Chiti's first contract after forming his own shop, Autodelta. Production began in 1961, slowly reaching homologation in 1963, at which point Autodelta became Alfa Romeo's factory race team. Initially using Giulia parts, a brand new tubular space frame chassis was constructed, with Zagato designing a lightweight aluminum body, which gave the car it's name. The 1,570cc four cylinder engine was heavily tuned, with two Weber carburetors and twin plugs, giving a final output of 160 horsepower. The engine was also slightly canted to lower the center of gravity. Perhaps just as important as the lightweight chassis, the previous SZ live rear axle was done away, in favor of fully independent suspension. The car was light, it handled well, was decently powerful, and thanks to the Kamm tail, was also fast in a straight line. Though outgunned by the Porsche 904 in the 2 liter category, in races featuring a 1.6 liter class the TZ was unstoppable. 1963 started with a class victory at the 12 hours of Sebring, followed by a 1-2-3 in class at the Targa Florio (3rd overall), a 1-2 in class at the Nürburgring, a 1-2 in class at Le Mans, a class victory at the Bridgehampton 500, and ending the season with a 1-2 in class at the Paris 1000km at Montlhery. Autodelta replaced the car with the even faster TZ2 the following year, leaving the TZ1 in privateer hands for the rest of the decade. https://thracing.de/ac-legends-gtc-60... https://f3classictracks.sellfy.store/...
