Established in 1988, the Sword Drill Team continues with the tradition of honoring the Academy’s Senior Class. Southern Preparatory Academy may well be the nation’s only military secondary school with an active Sword Drill team in continuous operation for over 30 years. Many of the traditions and rituals of the Sword Drill team are closely held and known only to the members of the team. Participation in these rituals helps keep the team’s morale at a high level during their long practice sessions. The practices culminate with the Sword Drill team performing at the Academy’s Military Day Ball. The Sword Drill team is selected each year in February from cadets who volunteer, resulting in 16 marching cadets and a Drill Team Commander and Deputy Commander. These cadets have sacrificed more than 100 hours of their free time to perfect the drill sequence you will see performed tonight. They have practiced while maintaining their normal daily schedule of classes, sports, and other activities. Clearly, it takes a great deal of commitment and perseverance to be a part of the Sword Drill team. The late COL Bill Jenrette, former Chancellor of the Academy, introduced Sword Drill to Southern Preparatory Academy and directed the performance for many years. The entire drill sequence you are about to see is executed primarily by silent count, and with minimal voice commands.
