On April 19th, 2012, members of a delegation of city representatives from the United States took part in a best practice conference called "Urban Talks" at the Bucerius Law School in Hamburg. The program was organized by the U.S. Consulate General of Hamburg and the National League of Cities in cooperation with the Bucerius Friends of USA. The idea of the conference was to share the approaches leading U.S. cities take to make themselves more sustainable, to reduce energy use, costs, waste and to improve transportation, awareness for environmental issues, and the quality of life in their cities. Mayor Buol from Dubuque, Iowa presented the projects and successes of his city including the partnership with IBM as a "Smarter City".
