EPSRC RISE | Professor Jeremy O'Brien meets Daniel Finkelstein

Professor Jeremy O'Brien is the Director for the Centre of #Quantum #Photonics at the University of Bristol. Through the EPSRC RISE Fellowship, he has been paired with Daniel Finkelstein, Associate Editor of the Times and member of the House of Lords. Professor Jeremy O'Brien's centre is focused on harnessing uniquely quantum mechanical effects for new technology in the communication and information sectors Part of his work is on #communication systems whose security is based on the laws of quantum physics. The idea is if information is encoded onto a quantum mechanical system, like a single beam of light, a photon, then any information extracted from that photon causes a disturbance in the photon that is detectable by the two legitimate parties that are communicating. His team is also working on making more precise sensors to be used in #healthcare and environmental monitoring and security.
