At the Colorado State Fire Fighters Association's 2025 Fire College, Chop Shop RX Instructors highlight how to use your backhand to take advantage of your tool and limit stress on your body while amplifying control of the tool. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Video Transcription: There is a human thing that says we are going to do this. So it's human nature. We're wired that way, abandoned that with the shear. It's a pirate hook. All I need to do is hook one blade. So when I'm operating the spreader making room for him, I don't need for him to be able to get this. I need for him to be able to get this, provided that that blade is behind what I want. I don't care where this blade is in space. It will meet, it's gonna push its way through, bend, cut and do everything it can to meet its partner. That's correct. So all we are looking for is one set on a blade the way you set. That blade nine outta 10 times is gonna be with your backhand. 'cause backhand is boss. Yep. Well, if I come in and I wanna spread right there, I just drop down. But I can orient that even though the tool's right there, just by lifting my backhand, I can set it relatively where I want it. Fine. Tune it from here and do it. Same thing. If I want to go up, I can just press down and the tip has probably 18 inches of travel without ever picking it up. Just use my backhand that low. Nope, nope, nope. It's coming in running. Right? Right there. Drop Now. See what he did with his backhand? He's looking right here. Look what his tool is angled at. So we want you to lower your back hand. I want that tool flat, son. There we go. Now open the back hand drives the tool, and I don't mean tottle. But really it's riding the tool as to where you're gonna go. He's trying to fight that in, but really all that matters is your backhand. Watch this arm go into the steering wheel as you move your back hand. Oh, there it is, right? Close it. He learned on that arm placement that it's all in his backhand. Backhand's boss. You're gonna see that as we start to cut more.
