I have been looking for a good image of Siripadaya for a very long time and I came across an image by Dhanuka Lunuwila @the_phtophiler a few months ago. Dhanuka very kindly allowed me to use his photograph as reference. I always paint my take, so this is not a copy but what I see when I look at Dhanuka’s photograph. In my mind’s eye I see a Buddhist Monk climbing the steps….. The annual pilgrimage to Siripadaya which is 7,360 feet or 2,243 m tall starts on Full Moon in December and ends on Full Moon in April. This a very sacred site for Buddhists as it is believed that The Buddha visited the peak and left an imprint of his sacred foot on the top of the mountain. Around 20,000 pilgrims of all ages from as young as 1 month will make this climb, my family and I have been fortunate enough to visit the peak once.
