Protest in support of Kelly Manus outside Symphony High School in Belhar

Cape Town, South Africa - 17 January 2024: A large crowd of people protested outsde the Sympjony High School in support of a former teacher at the school, Kelly Manus. In a TikTok video which went viral with almost a million views, Kelly explained how she lost her temporary post at the school. She alleges she was not offered a permanent post as a result of sexual harrassment allegation she lodged, against a male teacher at the school who also happens to be the husband of the school's principal. The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) has however refuted some of the allegations made by Manus in a press release. The WCED stated that allegations made by Manus was not the reason she did not get the post, but rather because the teacher did not meet the criteria set for the conversion to a permanent post. The department also stated that Manus did not want to proceed with a formal investigation after the complaint was laid. Protesters as the school today handed over a memorandum of demands to the WCED and have called for an dependent investigation into the matter, the suspension of the alleged perpetrator and continued departmental support.
