Hello and welcome to the second ODI of this three-match series. A middle-order collapse against spin left England 19 short of their target in the previous match and they need to win this one to keep the series alive. Sri Lanka vs England 2nd ODI England tour of Sri Lanka 2026 Live Commentary. Iqbal Sports. KM Punk. Crictalks. Their own spinners had put on a good show as well so there's cause for optimism but the batters will need to improve on a pitch that's expected to offer turn once again at the Premadasa. Sri Lanka used as many as five spinners in the previous game for a total of 36 overs. England weren't too far behind with 33. Iqbal Sports Live. KM Punk Live. Crictalks Live. Brook: Have to adapt to the conditions as quickly as possible. We think the pitch will play similar. Just keep rotating the strike as much as possible. It's disappointing. Have lost quite a few games away from home. Crawley is injured. Jacks comes in and will slot in the middle order. Rehan will open the innings. Asalanka: We're going to bat. All three departments did well (in first ODI). Fielding (what pleased him most?). Same team. Of course spin is important in these conditions. Likely more turn (on this pitch). Sri Lanka have won the toss and have opted to bat. R.Premadasa Stadium Colombo. SL vs ENG 2nd ODI England tour of Sri Lanka 2026. Sometimes in cricket the ball speaks louder than the bat… and today England’s spin had a microphone. Sri Lanka after choosing to bat first have been bundled out for 219 in 49.3 overs. A start that promised stability turned into a slow squeeze as England’s spinners and clever changes of pace choked the innings. The hosts had partnerships yes but no one carried it all the way. England now walk into the chase with control in their hands… and 220 on the board as the target. The first Powerplay? Steady. Careful. Almost cautious. Sri Lanka reached 36/1 after 10 overs with the only early dent being Kamil Mishara’s dismissal (5) caught off Jamie Overton’s probing spell. Nissanka looked composed striking a six and a couple of boundaries but England’s new-ball discipline meant runs were earned not gifted. Overton and Curran kept the lines tight. It was a Powerplay that whispered rather than roared. What changed just after the fielding restrictions? Spin entered… and so did the trouble. Pathum Nissanka (26) was the first big wicket caught off Adil Rashid making it 58/2. Then came a moment of chaos - Kusal Mendis run out (26 off 45) thanks to a miscommunication and sharp work from Will Jacks and Jos Buttler leaving Sri Lanka 68/3 at the drinks break. England weren’t just taking wickets… they were taking momentum. Who tried to rebuild in the middle overs? Enter the anchor partnership: Dhananjaya de Silva and Charith Asalanka. Together they stitched a crucial 66-run stand the kind that gives an innings a spine. De Silva’s 40 off 59 was gritty while Asalanka’s 45 off 64 played the captain’s role. Sri Lanka crossed 100 in 25.1 overs but England’s spin duo - Rashid and Dawson - made sure boundaries stayed rare. This was consolidation… but at a cost. Who broke the resistance? England’s spinners again. Dawson removed de Silva at 32.4 overs (134/4) with Root safe under the ball. Then Overton returned to dismiss Liyanage quickly and suddenly the innings wobbled again. The middle overs belonged to England’s control - Rashid 2/34 Dawson 1/41 Jacks 1/47. Dot balls piled up like pressure bricks. Did Sri Lanka find a late push towards the death overs? Briefly. Rathnayake played a handy knock - 29 off 34 while Wellalage added spark with 20 off 19. But just when Sri Lanka looked set for 250 wickets fell in clusters. Asalanka departed Rashid striking again. Rathnayake was out and England’s fielding remained sharp. The third Powerplay never became a launching pad. Sri Lanka did cross 200 in 46.3 overs but the last five overs brought 28 runs and 4 wickets. Root chipped in with a golden double - Wellalage caught and then Asitha Fernando c&b to end it. Rehan Ahmed cleaned up Madushan and Sri Lanka’s innings ended at 219 all out a total that feels competitive… but not imposing. What does this mean for the chase? Who’s ahead? England will feel they have the upper hand. A target of 220 on this surface looks chaseable with their depth - Root Brook Duckett Buttler. But Sri Lanka still have bowlers who can make it interesting under lights. The question is simple - can their attack do what England’s spinners just did? For now England have won the first half with patience pressure and spin.
