On October 15th 2025, I was asked to help rescue a young free-flying parrot named Rainbow who got stuck high in a tree. Rainbow, still inexperienced with free flight, likely got startled during his flight and ended up in the very top of a tree, refusing to come down despite his owner Kevin calling for him. I was contacted by Mariska, who also practices free flying with her parrots and had previously seen me climb trees. As a recreational tree climber, I often climb for relaxation, geocaching, retrieving lost items like drones, performing occasional tree work, and teaching climbing courses for The TreeClimbing Company. Since I had evening work scheduled, I decided to attempt the rescue in the morning. Using my climbing gear, I ascended the tree and managed to reach Rainbow near the outer canopy. Because I couldn't get close enough, I used a long pole to gently guide him toward me. Unfortunately, the branch he was standing on broke during the attempt, causing him to flap to another part of the tree. After climbing to him again and trying to call and lure him with food, Rainbow still refused to come closer. As a last attempt, I retrieved my hand saw to carefully remove the branch he was sitting on, hoping he would glide down toward Kevin waiting in the nearby field. To prevent him from flying too far, we tried using a water pistol to gently wet his feathers (wet parrots don’t fly well). However, just as I was about to cut the branch, Rainbow flew off in the opposite direction and landed high in another tree. After nearly four hours and running out of time before my evening shift, I made one final attempt using my drone to encourage him to move — but without success. Later that day, Kevin informed me that Rainbow safely returned home after the local fire department assisted using a stronger water spray to encourage him to leave the tree. This video shows the full setup, climbing process, and rescue attempts up until I had to leave for work. It was quite an adventure — for both Rainbow and me! 🎥 Filmed with:• Insta360 X5• GoPro Hero 10• GoPro Hero 12• DJI Neo Drone 🎵 Music by Elliot Holmes (Epidemic Sound) If you enjoy tree climbing, rescue adventures, or unique animal encounters, feel free to like, comment, and subscribe!
