This azalea has been sheared every year to a globe shape for about 15 years. Has always bloomed profusely in spring and maintained lush green for the remainder of year. When it became too big for its space, I wanted to cut deep to reduce the size. However, that will leave it bald. The globe, much like a green shell, is too dark; air circulation too poor for anything to grow inside. Last year, I did a severe prune leaving "clouds" on an open plant. The inner growth allows the pruning (cutting off) of the outer layer and still retain a lush green healthy look. It is now half the size of the original! Azalea back grow vigorously. This may not work well for those that do not. Better yet is to really watch what the mature size is and avoid having to do this. But it is what it is. I simply do not have the space that it want to take up. Related videos: Azalea - Girard's Fuchsia; Hino Crimson - In Blooms April 28 • Azalea - Girard's Fuchsia; Hino Crimson - ...
