Are you the type to only go for passive basses? This video may explain a big part of that reason, and how you can achieve the exact same tone in many active basses. Today, I discuss the vagaries of the passive tone control - how it works in tandem with your pickup coils on a fully passive bass, and how you can add one into your active bass - even if your bass has an active, buffered blend like mine! This would work on any bass without active pickups (but including most preamps); and even those with passives that are electronically isolated down the line (some Audere, John East, Mike Pope, Bartolini, Richter & other preamps). In this video I'm using my MTD USA 535-24 with its stock, low impedance, passive Bartolini pickups (that feed directly into a 2 channel buffer), modified with a truly passive tone control that interacts with the pickup coils in parallel, just as a stock passive bass' tone control does.
