In this painting I masked out where the snow on the tree would go with masking fluid. I did not draw the tree first because then I would have to follow within the lines which is more difficult, so I just painted the snowy shapes right on the paper with masking fluid. I also splattered some masking fluid into the sky for falling snow. I painted my sky wet in wet and then once dry I painted the background trees wet on dry. At the start of this video I am removing the masking fluid. Masking fluid dries like rubber cement and you can just rub it off with your finger to reveal the white paper. In the tutorial I show you a few different ways I can approach painting the shadows on the snow. I'm using cobalt blue and ultramarine blue mixed with rose madder genuine. Lastly, I paint the dark boughs of the tree poking out beneath the snow. I paint them last because then they won't risk bleeding into the snow when I paint on my shadows. Hope you enjoy this short demonstration of how to paint snow on trees in watercolour. It is mostly in real time with a little bit of time-lapse mixed in so that it won't be too long. I'm talking you through it step by step as I paint.
