MEXICO CITY — Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman escaped from a prison in central Mexico on Saturday night, embarrassing Mexican officials who had promised that El Chapo’s 2001 escape, achieved with the help of prison guards, would not be repeated. Guzman escaped from Altiplano Federal Penitentiary at around 8:52 p.m. local time on Saturday by crawling through a series of tunnels located right underneath the shower of his prison cell. The longest tunnel, a 1,500-metre-long horizontal tunnel included lighting and ventilation, and ended at an isolated house in the nearby neighborhood of Santa Juanita. Mexican authorities have begun a manhunt in the area and are holding at least 30 employees for questioning, including the head of the prison. In 2001, Guzman paid prison guards to help him escape from the high-security Puente Grande prison in the Mexican city of Guadalajara.
