Sometimes with the best of intentions, we create a WBS (work breakdown structure), that does not support our needs. Often it is due to our own misunderstanding of the WBS. The most common error is to organize your WBS by organizational structure. I've done this! I do not know if the fact that it is a common error is good news or bad news. The good news is that now I know better. The next error is time phasing the WBS. This is my favorite mistake because this is how I was taught to create the WBS! So I was actually taught incorrectly. But then through additional training (like what you're doing now with the WBS coach program ), I realized I was off track. Organizing your WBS by phases of the project can be the most controversial mistake because people really cling to it. Clearly as with the people who taught me to do it this way. It's OK that we think chronologically. That's natural that we think, you know "First I do A then I do B and next, I do C." That's OK and in fact, if you build your WBS from left to right in the order in which the product gets produced that's OK because later when you apply your numbering scheme to your WBS you will add those IDs and control IDs from left to right. The problem is that phases can lead to assumptions and missed items. Because instead of focusing on the what, you are focusing on the phase. And you might not capture all of the required work, you will simply be defining the start and end of a phase, and the work that usually occurs in that phase.
