ARCHIE BIO I first took up the fiddle at 12 year old.I had previously dabbled with button box, drums and piano but discovered the fiddle was for me….I was taught by Maurice Duncan and went to him to show me how to play Strathspeys and other rudiments of the fiddle from the North east tradition and tunes from the pipe tradition too. I went on to compete around the country which gave me a lot of experience and influences. I won a few competitions but the experience of meeting and hearing all the other great musicians was more beneficial. I have been influenced by many people including: Hector McAndrew, Angus Cameron and Judith Davidson. My first experience of music was through my family who are musical in both sides. My father Duncan and brother Alex play accordion and I would learn and play at dances and ceilidhs with them throughout Kintyre. I also took a keen interest in folk music and played in a local band in Campbeltown called the Wee Toon Tellers. I learned a lot in how to accompany songs and improvise and just have a lot of fun. We still get together the odd time. I went on to record 3 albums with Ross Kennedy: Twisted Fingers, Gathering Storms and White Swan. I also played with the Jura Ceilidh band and recorded 2 albums with them. That took us across to Cape Breton to record along with Jerry Holland and other Cape Breton Musicians. From then on Jerry Holland has been a great influence on my playing along with other Canadian players like Graham Townsend. I have played on Take the floor with many dance bands like Alasdair McCuish and the Black Rose, Nicky McMichan, Robert Black who did the Jim Johnston tribute band and Skipinnish. The first time I played on Take the floor was when I was 18 year old with Ryan McGlynn in 1988 at Queen Margaret drive. I have played with other duos and trios with my Brother Alex, Ross Kennedy, John Saich, Iain Stretch McFadyen and Scott Gordon. I also played on TV with Fergie McDonald and band. I have played at Celtic connections through the years in different line ups including Blazin fiddles 10th anniversary in 2008 and The All Star Ceilidh band. Throughout the years I have done a lot of session work playing with Gaelic singers such as Anna Murray and Ann Lorne Gillies. I got nominated for the best musician category in 2004 which was nice to begin with the other great musicians at the Trad awards Personally, I recorded my own album Fiddlers Rock in 2007 that was done at Water Colour Studios. I had great guest musicians playing including Iain McDonald and Allan Henderson. I teach fiddle in Lochgilphead and been doing this online of late. I have also taught in Tarbert and Campbeltown over the last 20 years. I have also been at Blazin in Beauly teaching and performing and have taught at different feis around the West coast. In 2017 I taught and played at the Dunkeld fiddle festival and at the Scots fiddle Festival on three different occasions in Edinburgh. In 2018 I was invited to the Glenties Fiddle Festival in Donegal which was a fantastic experience. I have been to many different festivals all over Scotland and beyond but a few favourite ones are the Jura Music festival (which I have played at from the very first one in 1994), the Shetland festival which has always been brilliant, especially the lounge bar, the Mull music festival where I got the chance to play with Bobby MacLeod a couple of times in 1987. That festival has been incredible over the years. Lately I have been playing along with Sileas Sinclair which has been great. We have been to Shetland a couple of times and have done other gigs like Partick folk club. Skipinnish have been a big part in my musical journey through the years.I have played with them since their 2nd album in 2003. I played my first gig with them in South Korea when they were more of a ceilidh band. I have performed with them all over Scotland, England and Europe. It has been an incredible journey and has been a blast doing gigs like Usher Hall, the Barrowlands and festivals like Shrewsbury, Lorient and Tonder.I have supported the band doing opening support with Rachel Walker and have done fiddle sets too as a support act which was very enjoyable to do. I also playing on their albums which have had great acclaim. Hopefully this journey will continue when we get back playing gigs again. I was lucky to be asked to play at the Clydesdale Accordion club by Iain Cathcart where I ended up playing with the brilliant Craig Paton. From that performance we went on to record for Take the Floor special which turned out brilliant for us and I will be glad to do more recording with Craig in the future as it was pretty special for myself to play with him. On that note I will be looking to record and do a new CD in the near future and have no doubt there will be many other projects coming off. In the meantime I will just continue to get the head down and teach online which is fine and do online gigs which have been a blessing for the punters
