Dark is the Night - Soviet WW2 Song "Dark Is the Night" (Тёмная ночь, translated as "Dark Night") is a well-known Soviet song linked to the Great Patriotic War. It was initially performed by Mark Bernes in the 1943 wartime movie Two Soldiers. The music, composed by Nikita Bogoslovsky (1913–2004) with lyrics by Vladimir Agatov, was created specifically for this film. Interestingly, Leonid Utyosov, without obtaining approval from the song's creators or the film team, recorded the song—making him the first to do so. Despite this, it was Bernes’ rendition that ultimately brought the song widespread acclaim. In the movie, Bernes’ character, a soldier, sings the song as he nostalgically remembers his wife and child during a quiet night. Although some critics accused Bogoslovsky of promoting overly sentimental and "Philistine" music, the song resonated deeply with many and became an emblem of the war era for countless Soviet citizens. Described as a "gentle and lyrical piece evoking a sense of longing for home and love," the song offered a more personal glimpse into the lives of soldiers, in contrast to the typical war songs of the time, which were often patriotic marches or military field anthems. #soviet #ussr #music #ww2 #instrumental
