In the first episode of the third series of Impact Conversations, Dr Hakan Karaosman is joined by Dr Maryam Lotfi. Maryam is an associate professor at Cardiff Business School and the co-founder of the Modern Slavery and Social Sustainability Research Group. This conversation is timely: The recent disruption in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most critical shipping routes for oil and gas, highlights the fragility of the global economy. Almost a fifth of the world’s oil passes through this narrow corridor each day, making it a vital artery for the global energy supply. When instability threatens such chokepoints, the consequences extend far beyond regional politics, triggering ripple effects across global supply chains, energy markets and economic systems. What is unfolding is not just a regional conflict, but a global supply chain crisis playing out in real time. We discuss a deeper tension currently exposed at the heart of globalisation. These pressures raise a series of urgent questions. What does genuine resilience look like in a permanently unstable world? Are we witnessing a turning point in globalisation, shifting from hyper-efficiency towards greater fragmentation and regionalisation? As supply chains restructure in response to energy disruptions and the broader energy transition, how can supply chain management scholars research and disseminate knowledge in this new era of global and structural tensions?
