Shoeing a horse that has ruptured their superficial digital flexor (SDFT) is not easy. The role of the SDFT is to flex and stabilise the fetlock. The superficial digital flexor tendon works with the superficial digital flexor muscle to make the lower leg move. The SDFT emerges from its parent muscle, the superficial digital flexor muscle, which is located above the carpus (knee) or hock. (https://www.avonvaleequine.co.uk/blog...) It was important that we didn't over lower the heels to keep tension on the SDFT and also very important we supported the fetlock without adding too much pressure at the same time. Dudley was cast tightly by the vets and box rested until he was sound at walk, this took nearly 6 months but it was so worth waiting for. He has now made enough of a recovery to be in light work and continues to enjoy an much easier life!
