Teddy Brown (born Abraham Himmelbrand, b. New York 1900; died in Birmingham, UK, 12 April 1946) was an American xylophone virtuoso, saxophonist, and drummer. Originally a player in the New York Philharmonic, he moved on to the dance band world in the 1920s, one of his first assignments being with JULIUS LENZBERG'S RIVERSIDE DANCE ORCHESTRA, with which he recorded for Edison in New York. He went to London in 1926 to lead his own orchestra at the Cafe De Paris and later the Kit Kat Club. His great girth (a claimed peak weight of 266 kilos/588 pounds), jolly disposition and virtuoso xylophone playing made him a great favorite on radio and in variety, appearing in the Royal Variety Performance in 1931. He died while on tour at the age of only 46 - perhaps not surprising. However, you can hear him really driving the rhythm of this band, aged only 19 at the time, with some really magnificent xylophone extemporisations.
