(17 Feb 1998) Natural Sound As U-S troops stationed in the Persian Gulf prepare for a possible war with Iraq, military exercises are also underway by U-S forces in Turkey. Troops at Incirlik Air base in southern Turkey are conducting practice manoeuvres should the U-S decide air strikes are necessary to force Iraq to comply with U-N weapons inspections. But Turkey has said the base, which was used by the allies in the 1991 Gulf War, may not be used for air raids against Iraq this time around. In preparation for a possible war with Iraq, exercises are being carried out by U-S troops at the Incirlik Air base in Turkey. The runway was busy with planes and helicopters traffic at the base in the southern part of the country. The troops, like their counterparts in the Persian Gulf, are gearing up for a possible military showdown between the U-S and Iraq. The U-S and Britain have threatened to strike Iraq if it does not fully comply with U-N resolutions to destroy its weapons of mass destruction. However, practice manoeuvres may be all the troops will be able to do at the base. Incirlik, near the southern city of Adana, was used by the U-S and its allies during the 1991 Gulf War to launch air raids on Iraq. But Turkey has said it will not allow use of the base again as a launch pad for such attacks. The Turkish parliament ruled the air base can be used only for reconnaissance flights in the current crisis. Turkey is concerned about the negatives effects a new war could have on the stability of the entire region.
