The panel is organised by the Euro-Atlantic Resilience Centre in partnership with Instytut Europy Środkowej, Lublin. The illegal and unjustified Russian invasion of Ukraine has brought to the forefront of Euro-Atlantic attention the importance of unity and resilience throughout the democratic world. Strong emphasis was placed on Eastern Partnership and Western Balkans countries, whose accessions were prioritised in 2022. The EU granted candidate status to Moldova and Ukraine, and recognized Georgia as a potential candidate. Accession negotiations were opened with Albania and North Macedonia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina was designated as a candidate country. With the Spanish Presidency of the EU Council making the strengthening of European unity one of its four priorities, enlargement progress has never looked stronger. As for NATO, both the 2022 Strategic Concept and the past two years’ summit declarations reaffirmed the importance of the Western Balkans and Eastern European regions for the Alliance. What are, therefore, the challenges and opportunities these countries have to navigate in order to achieve our common goal for stronger democratic resilience and more security and what can the two organisations, EU and NATO, do in order to support them in becoming more resilient?
