At that prestigious event was revealed a strange new beast – the newly built Class 139 (categorised under TOPS – Total Operations Processing System – more on that in another video). This new railcar was in fact the Parry People Movers unique PPM60. The prototype designated as a Class999 was originally designed for the Stourbridge Town branch line – touted as the shortest Branch line in Europe at a tiny .8 miles long. Parrys use a flywheel system for motive power initially energised by a small on-board LPG powered engine, precluding the need for a large and heavy diesel variant. The initial trials of a flywheel based railcar started back in 2006 with extensive trials on this same branch line, which proved very successful. The production units – 139.001 and 002 were actually one metre longer than the test units but otherwise mechanically similar. There were delays with the introduction of these units as in January 2009 the 139.001 was still in it’s test phase, with 139.002 yet to be completed. In fact it wasn’t until March 2009 that both units entered service with full service being achieved by May of the same year. These wonderfully innovative units are still in service today. #class139 #Stourbridge #trainstrainstrains Facebook:- / travelandtra. . Twitter:- / judithschooling Instagram: - / judithschoo. .
