People often ask me, "Why Nihangs and Taksalis read a longer version of Sri Rehrass Sahib? Many enquire, "Why is the "Nihang Rehrass Sahib" even longer than the "Taksali Rehrass Sahib"? Surprisingly, most Sikhs do NOT know that the version of Sri Rehrass Sahib that's recited at Sri Harminder Sahib (Golden Temple) was modified and enforced upon the Sikhs in the1920s during the British Raj. Historically, Sri Rehrass Sahib has two versions, and both these versions were accepted by Sri Guru Gobind Singh Sahib Ji. One version has more baani and longer stanzas from Dasam Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji than the other. Sri Gurbani Ji from Sri Adh Darbar or Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji is almost the same in both these versions. In the first version, Sri Chaupai Sahib ji starts from "Mahakaal Kee Jeh Saran" and the second version starts at "Pun Rachas Ka Kata Sisa". Actually, "Puna Rachas Ka Kata Sisa" is at the end of the "Mahakaal Kee Jeh Saran" stanza. In addition, the first version has more Sri Dasam Bani and longer stanzas. Traditionally, Nihang Singhs and Hazoori Singhs have followed the longer version of the evening prayer. The Taksali version is also known as Bhai Mani Singh Sahib Ji's version of Sri Rehrass Sahib. Sant Baba Gurbachan Singh Sahib "Khalsa Ji", one of the gems of the Khalsa Panth and the 12th Jathedar of Sri Damdami Taksal*, briefly explained the historic difference between the two versions of Sri Rehrass Sahib, and how it was maliciously shortened and modified to its present "Harmandir Sahib" version shown on TV. *Sant Gurbachan Singh Ji or "Khalsa Ji" was an acclaimed mystic and scholar. Top scholars (Vidya Maartands) and preachers other faiths visited "Khalsa Ji" to learn about their own religious texts, in addition to the divine message of Gurbani
