During a visit to the Pituffik Space Base in Greenland on Friday, U.S. Vice President JD Vance spoke about the “importance” of the American military’s presence in the Danish territory — something he said will “ensure that American is leading in the Arctic.” Though the Republican vice-president did not directly agree with the idea of annexing Greenland, he backed up President Donald Trump’s plans to do so. By pointing the finger at Denmark for making Greenland “less secure” over the last two decades, Vance suggested China and Russia pose a more immediate threat to the Greenlandic people after “taking extraordinary interest in Arctic passageways and Arctic naval routes.” “We hope that they [Greenland] choose to partner with the United States, because we're the only nation on Earth that will respect their sovereignty and respect their security. Their security is very much our security,” Vance said. “We have no other option,” Vance added, suggesting if Greenland did not become independent of Denmark and allow the U.S. to acquire it, “other regimes that don’t have the best interest” would eventually take over the Arctic.
