In this poignant and impactful narrative, Paul Conroy, a veteran photojournalist, recounts his experiences in Syria in 2012, alongside the acclaimed journalist Marie Colvin of The Sunday Times. The journey begins in Devon, where an unexpected call leads them to one of the world's most dangerous places. Illegally crossing borders and facing extreme risks, Paul highlights the power and importance of photography in documenting the brutality of conflicts. This talk pays homage to the crucial role of journalists in conflict areas and their efforts to combat misinformation, focusing on the human stories emerging "from the basement," where the true face of war is revealed. Paul Conroy is an award-winning photographer with over 25 years of experience in conflict photography. In 2012, while on assignment for The Sunday Times, Paul and legendary war correspondent Marie Colvin were attacked by the Syrian regime whilst covering the siege of Homs. Marie was killed, but Paul, critically wounded, survived. His memoir of the events in Syria (Under the Wire) has been made into a Hollywood movie, 'A Private War' and an EMMY nominated documentary of the same name 'Under the Wire'. In 2019, Paul received a Society of Editors award and the May Chidiac Impact Award for his photography in war zones. Paul has covered conflicts in Libya, Syria, Iraq, DRC, Egypt, Afghanistan, and the Balkans. Paul currently sits on the boards of the Frontline Club and Reporters San Frontieres. Paul continues to photograph conflicts around the world. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
