Although exploring a Winter landscape can seem quiet and still, there can be plenty of activity under the snow. Many small animals find food, stay warm and escape predation throughout the Winter, under the snow, in an ecosystem known as the Subnivean Zone. The accumulation of snow insulates against the freezing temperatures, as the warmth from geothermal activity and captured body heat get trapped atop the ground, but under the snow, or Intranivean Zone. Most Winter predators and other larger birds and animals have adaptations to endure life in the snow, or the Supranivean Zone. Weasel are adapted to explore the tunnels made by Meadow Voles, Mice, Shrews and Squirrel. Red Fox and Barred Owls have adaptation to hear and feel the activity of prey in Subnivean tunnels, under the snow. Explore winter landscapes for signs of impact craters from Red Fox and Owls in fields, or small tracks leading to tunnels that disappear in the snow. There is a hidden world of activity under our feet. Go outside. Thank you for watching
