I filmed this during the Aircraft Carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt's (CVN-71) transit of the Atlantic, steaming toward the Persian Gulf to join the Coalition forces massing there to begin attacks on Saddam Hussein's forces. I was serving with Carrier Air Wing 8 in HS-9 "Sea Griffins". The video was filmed on an 8mm video camcorder. Please excuse the video anomalies that you see in the video. The video tape camcorders were effected by the Radar constantly operating on the ship and most of the anomalies are caused by that, even though I would wrap the camcorder in aluminum foil before recording, although the tape is also over 30 years old and was played many times before I got it transferred to DVD, so some is from wear on the tape. I am thankful that I was serving during a time when there were so many different aircraft types, doing mostly their own mission specialties, rather than the way it is today, where they have only a few types performing multiple mission tasks, mostly the F/A-18. My favorite aircraft on the flight deck was always the F-14 Tomcat, which may be obvious from the video, and I never got tired of watching them launch and land. Such a beautiful aircraft! I hope you enjoy the video. Those are great memories for me. I dedicate this video to the Sailors of Air Wing 8, the crew of the USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71) and especially to the men of HS-9 "Sea Griffins". The music was plugged directly into the camera and recorded from a tape Walkman as I filmed over 30 years ago, so there is no sound editing. The music heard is copyrighted and property of its prospective owners and I do not own the rights and no copyright infringement is intended. The songs heard are: "Layin' It On The Line" by Jefferson Starship and "Be Good To Yourself" by Journey I hope you enjoy this video!
