I have plans to convert a pretty large part of our pasture into a seasonal garden. Unfortunately, I have learned that we have some pretty rocky soil, so I am going to have to use raised beds. But, raised beds means hauling in a LOT of soil. To alleviate this problem, I have this idea of using a permaculture technique known as hugelkultur. Hugelkultur is the soil building practice of burying piles of decaying wood and other compostable debris under a layer of soil. Over time, the debris will decay to soil, and the pile will shrink. After all of the debris has composted, the new soil can be spread around to other areas, and a new hugelkultur mound can be started. In the mean time, the mound can be used to grow delicious fruits and veggies!! And, they have the advantage of retaining lots of moisture, even in drought conditions. The wood and debris soaks up water whenever it rains (or, you can give it a good soak before burying it) and acts as a water reserve for your plants. If you would like more information on hugelkultur, check out the links I've provided, below.
