The Precious Now: Most of us spend our lives in a "Trance of Doing." We treat the present moment as a hurdle to get over so we can reach a "better" version of ourselves or our day. But when we are always leaning into the future, we miss the only place where we are actually alive: the Precious Now. We practice mindfulness not to "fix" ourselves, but to come home to our "Original Goodness." Think of the legend of the Golden Buddha: for centuries, a magnificent gold statue was covered in ordinary clay to protect it. Eventually, people forgot the gold was there. Our stress, our "to-do" lists, and our self-judgments are the clay. We practice to chip away that mask and reveal the gold of our natural awareness. The Tools: Intention and RAIN To help us stay present, we use two powerful tools: Intention: This is our "heart’s compass." It isn’t a goal to achieve, but a direction. We ask ourselves, "What is my deepest longing?" Perhaps it is to be more kind or simply to be steady. Intention seeds our practice with meaning. RAIN: Because the "Now" isn't always easy, we use the RAIN acronym to navigate difficult emotions: Recognize what is happening. Allow it to be there without a fight. Investigate how it feels in the body with curiosity. Nurture the struggle with a gesture of kindness, like a hand on the heart. By practicing the Precious Now, we stop being "at war" with our experience. We learn that we are not the clouds; we are the vast, open sky that holds them. Let’s begin by setting an intention to arrive, exactly as we are.
