In this episode of 'Frontline', journalist Bram Vermeulen delves into the geopolitical storm surrounding New Caledonia, a tropical Pacific island that has been the scene of fierce conflict for decades. While the indigenous Kanak population fights for independence, France has sent thousands of additional agents to break the resistance. Why does the French government continue to cling to an island that carries with it a past as a penal colony? Unrest has intensified on New Caledonia: the indigenous Kanaks are demanding their independence, and in an attempt to quell the resistance, the French government has sent thousands of additional agents to the island. Amid the violent confrontations, Bram Vermeulen tries to figure out why France seems so determined to maintain control of the island, despite the growing calls for self-determination from the local population. The island turns out to have one of the largest nickel reserves in the world, a raw material essential for batteries in electric cars and the “green” energy transition. The Kanak's desire for independence thus threatens Europe's future. Paris, however, fears that the Kanak's struggle for independence will end in a takeover of the island by another superpower in the region that also craves nickel: China. Bram interviews local leaders, representatives of the Kanak movement and French authorities. He examines the historical and geopolitical context of the conflict and explores France's interests in the region. Why does the island remain so valuable to France? What do these tensions mean for the future of New Caledonia and the broader discussion of colonial legacies and independence movements? Frontline offers an in-depth look at the situation, which affects not only the future of New Caledonia, but also all relations between former colonial powers and their overseas territories.
