YouTube Music: • Fairy Tale in F Minor, Op.26: No. 3 Pandora: https://www.pandora.com/artist/luke-f... This Fairy Tale is a short musical poem. The musical lines are serpentine and meandering, never really settling in one particular place, and each phrase ends as if with a question mark. Even the climactic middle section ends abruptly with a sudden change of harmony creating a dramatic abyss from which emerges the opening theme (1:27) but now at a slightly higher pitch. Happily the meandering qualities of the music enable it to wander in search of the original key, but we only get there at the very end of the reprise! To conclude the piece Medtner needs to add more weight to this arrival in F minor and he does so by including a brief coda (a sort of musical tail). The lowest note of the piece - the resonant F that heralds the coda (2:07) - does a lot to establish this but the figuration that follows is still ethereal and meandering, eventually coalescing into a double trill (which is a sort of nebulous musical plasma). Out of this plasma, the final few notes whisper an F minor "home" harmony before dying away. I'm not sure what Medtner was trying to say exactly, but perhaps that makes it even more interesting to me. Apologies for the high-school musical analysis 😅 I just felt like writing something about how I see this music and why I wanted to share it.
