In chemistry it is important to be able to tell the difference between Phosphorous, the Phosphide, Phosphite, and Phosphate ion. While the names are similar, they are very different substances. Phosphorous is a neutral element. It if found as P on the Periodic Table Phosphide is the ion of Phosphorous. It's formula is P 3- . Phosphite is a polyatomic ion with a 3- ionic charge. It's formula is PO3 3- . Phosphate is a polyatomic ion with a 3- ionic charge. It's formula is PO4 3- . It is probably a good idea to memorize the Phosphate ion (PO4 3-) since it comes up frequently in chemistry. You can then use the naming rule that an ion ending in ite has one less Oxygen atom that the ion ending in -ate. So if Phosphate is PO4 3 , then Phosphite is PO3 3-. This rule can be used with other similar polyatomic ions as well. Helpful Videos Memorizing the Polyatomic Ions: • Memorizing and Using the List of Polyatomi...
