Suicide is rarely due to a single cause. This video introduces the Socio-Ecological model for studying and making sense of suicide, to the extent it is possible. T The risk factors for suicide are found at multiple levels. Those risk factors can sometimes include the region and community of the person who is considering suicide, as well as their relationships, how they feel inside, and whether the individual has access to means of causing their own death. The most common formulation of all the risk factor levels is called the Socio-Ecological Model. This video also introduces the work of Ms. Anne Fuqua, who identified a large number of suicides occurring after reduction of prescription opioids in patients with long-term pain. The speaker is Dr. Stefan G. Kertesz of University of Alabama at Birmingham and Birmingham, Alabama Veterans Affairs Health Care System. Views are those of himself alone, and do not represent formal positions of the US government. Have You Lost Someone with Chronic Pain? Help Us Prevent Suicide After Reductions in Pain Medication The University of Alabama at Birmingham is seeking participants for a study on mental health vulnerabilities during pain medication transitions. If you believe your loved one’s death took place after a reduction or stoppage of prescription-strength pain medications, consider joining our study. Coming forward to share your loved one’s experience may help save others in similar situations. Together, we can be a force for positive, systematic change in the healthcare system and protect vulnerable populations. If you have lost someone with pain to suicide & want to consider joining this study, check https://go.UAB.edu/csi If you would like general information about the research project, check www.csiopioids.org.
