The Army and Navy recipe has evolved since it's original creation. It is essentially a riff on a gin sour. The original recipe resulted in a sub par drink, utilising measurements of 60mL Gin, 30mL Lemon Juice and 30mL Orgeat (8:4:4 ratio). David Embury's tweaked the original formulation in his 1948 cocktail book, Fine Art of Mixing Drinks, which calls for 60mL Gin and only 15mL Lemon Juice and 7.5mL Orgeat (8:2:1 ratio) for a strong, gin-forward version. The first recipe in the video (and my preferred ratio) allows for a balance of botanicals from the dry gin, citrus and almond notes. I preferred the single dash of aromatic bitters to compliment the drink rather than overtaking the other ingredients. This particular recipe's ratio is 8:3:2 (which is found below). INGREDIENTS 60mL Gin (2 oz) 22.5mL Fresh Lemon Juice ( oz) 15mL Orgeat ( oz) Dash of Angostura METHOD 1. Combine all ingredients into your cocktail shaker 2. Shake with ice 3. Strain into a chilled coupe glass Music by Julian Avila - Blur: / blur
