The Forgotten Story of Gopal Patha's BRAVERY on Direct Action Day Gopal Chandra Mukherjee, commonly called Gopal 'Patha', was a meat trader from Kolkata and came into the limelight in an unusual way during the 1946 Kolkata riots (Direct Action Day Riots). He got the nickname "Patha" because he traded goats (patha). On 16 August 1946, Direct Action Day was celebrated by the Muslim League, with the aim of strengthening the demand for a separate Muslim nation in India - Pakistan. On that day, large-scale riots took place in Kolkata (then Calcutta), in which thousands of Hindus were brutally killed. When the government machinery and the British government remained completely inactive and the Hindu community was helpless, Gopal Patha took the lead to protect his community. ⚔ Organization and Resistance: Gopal Patha gathered his meat sellers, butchers and local youth and formed a volunteer security force. Instead of weapons, they initially used knives, goat slaughtering tools and whatever was available. Soon he emerged as an organized Hindu security force. He clearly stated – “We will not attack, but if anyone attacks us, we will respond – and respond fully.” Gopal Patha adopted defensive violence as a policy of Hindus. His strategy saved many Hindu areas. It is believed that if Gopal Patha had not taken up the counter front, there would have been a huge massacre of Hindus in Kolkata. 🕊 Later life: After the riots, Gopal Patha never again took part in politics or violence. He returned to his business and lived a quiet life. Today his name may not be in the history books, but he is remembered as a hero and protector for the Hindu community of Bengal and especially Kolkata.
