s03e12 I learned about crossing a bar from a friend who had done it a lot. I was also fortunate enough to have had a long talk with Brownie (of Brownie’s Coastwatch). Learning from a friend was good but that talk with Brownie and listening to the wealth of knowledge he had about boating in general and bar crossings in particular was invaluable. I am particularly grateful to Brownie for taking the time to explain the idiosyncrasies of the Hydrofield I owned when it came to bar crossings. There was one occasion when the knowledge he imparted saved my boat and quite possibly the lives of some on board. 99% of my bar crossing experience was in that Hydrofield and I have only crossed the bar a handful of times since parting with that boat. With all that in mind and a new boat I hadn’t had time to build any confidence in I thought it was time to refresh my bar crossing skills, so I booked a Bar Crossing course with Bill Corten. Bill is another great guy with a wealth of experience on the water and the ability to pass that information on. I picked Bill up off the pontoon at 8AM and we arrived back around 3PM and I have to say that was a great 7 hours on the water. Along with the basics, Bill taught me a few tricks about crossing a bar that I had never heard of before. Most importantly, by the time we had finished I had confidence that the boat would handle the bar as well as the Hydrofield, but, being a monohull and a good deal lighter, it just had to be handled a little differently. I wanted to get some video of the bar crossing but unfortunately there was an electrical fault and I didn’t realise my video camera wasn’t getting any power. Anyway, I highly recommend the course, even if you think you know it all it’s likely you will learn something. When it comes to bar crossings you can never have enough skill. The track I have on the screen is from the bar crossing course. As you can see, we spent all the time going in and out over the bar. Just be aware that the image of the bar that the track is overlayed on is out of date. It doesn’t show where the channels are today, even the shoreline isn’t accurate. Please don’t think that it is in any way possible to use the image as a map to attempt a bar crossing. I’ll just note that it isn’t possible to lock in a day for the course until the weather forecast is suitable. Bill doesn’t want the bar to be so calm that there is no challenge or so rough that it becomes dangerous to learn on. I am not associated with Bill’s bar crossing course, other than as a customer. I paid full price for the course and I don’t get any commission if anyone decides they would like to do the course after watching this video. Having said all that, if you would like to contact Bill to enquire about doing a course yourself, his number is: Contact Bill Corten on: 0447 233 247 ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Follow weFish-AU on: ► FishTrax: https://fishtrax.we-fish.com.au ► Facebook: https://fb.me/wefishAU ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
