Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer is the capital of the Camargue - famous for its white horses, bulls & the flamingoes that can be found in the surrounding wetlands. The town is also home to the Église Notre-Dame-de-la-Mer, a fortified church built between the 9th & 12th centuries as a fortress and a refuge. With the flat surrounding lands, the church can be seen from 10 km away. Raided by both the Vikings and the Saracens, the town is famous for the relics of Mary of Clopas and Mary Salome, who were said to have arrived there by sea together with Mary Magdalene who were said to have arrived there after being set adrift after the Crucifixion. The church is also the centre of the Roma celebrations of Saint Sara who is believed to have been the Egyptian servant of the Saintes-Maries. Finally we cross a branch of the Rhône via Bac du Sauvage cable ferry - as featured in the wonderful 2020 film "The Man in the Hat". In the film, Ciaran Hinds plays our epnonymous hero and makes his getaway on the ferry before visiting the Bull Ring in the town.
