Edward M. Nassor performed "Lift Every Voice and Sing" on the 50-bell Netherlands Carillon on Sunday, Aug. 25, 2019 as part of a nationwide Day of Healing to remember the 400th anniversary of slaves being brought to what was to later become the United States of America. This song was written as a poem by James Weldon Johnson in 1900 and set to music by his brother John Rosamond Johnson. Because of the song's power in voicing a cry for freedom and affirmation of African-Americans, the NAACP nicknamed this song "the Negro national anthem." The video shows some of the scenery at the base of the Netherlands Carillon in Arlington, VA. Nassor played the carillon for a half hour as part of the National Park Service "Nationwide Bell Ringing Ceremony" to recognize the anniversary of African slavery arriving to the English Colonies in Virginia. Bells were sounded at National Parks around the country at the same time -- here it was 3 p.m. EDT.
