The long-tailed chinchilla ranks number one in cuteness, at least among all the animals I know of, and the comments in the background from the other zoo goers confirms that. Like the visitor in the background said, the chinchilla is like a mixture of a hamster, a rabbit, and a cat. Chinchillas are rodents. The long-tailed chinchilla (Chinchilla lanigera), is also called the Chilean chinchilla, coastal chinchilla, common chinchilla, and the lesser chinchilla. The genus Chinchilla has two species, and this is by far the cuter one. These furry animals live along a thin strip of mountainous land running along central Chile. Wild ones grow up to 26 cm long and weigh up to 500 g. Domesticated pet chinchillas get much larger and are more sexually dimorphic, with females weighing up to 800 g and males 600 g. Mating season occurs between October and December, which is summer in the Southern Hemisphere. Chinchillas are a great pet idea and are for sale in U.S. pet store chains. By all accounts they are gentle, very friendly, and can be trained to obey commands. Some like to be cuddled, while others will ride on the head and shoulders. They seem to take more time to warm up to their owners than domesticated dogs but that is to be expected due to their rodent nature and lack of breeding history compared to cats and dogs. Chinchillas live up to the same age as many long-lived domestic dogs and cats: around 15-years-old. Click here to browse through my rodents playlist: • Rodents
