Discharge ink is a special and difficult ink to work with. Learn more about how this ink can offer you bright prints while maintaining the ultimate softness of your shirts. Plastisol Ink - Learn about the most commonly used ink in garment decoration; plastisol. • Ink Series | Plastisol Water-Based Ink - The perfect ink for the softest prints when combined with polyblend fabrics. • Ink Series | Water Based — In this video, we're going to talk about discharge ink. In the last two videos, we discussed plastisol ink and water-based ink. If you missed those, go check them out. Discharge ink is a special kind of ink that can remove dye from fabric without damaging it. Why is it called discharge? Honestly, I'm not sure. Maybe the guy that invented it thought if he called it something gross that you wouldn't want on your shirt, he could keep it a secret. It seems to have worked because there are very few screen printers that offer it. If you can find a printer that'll do it, Discharge is a very cool technique to use on fabric. Simply put it neutralizes the garment dye. For example, a black shirt looks black because it absorbs most of the light spectrum. Discharge ink modifies the black dye molecules in the fabric making them inert and transparent. It's like bleach, but not destructive. Discharge tends to work best on earth tones and darks like brown, gray, navy, and black. It tends to not work as well on brighter colors like greens, purples, and reds. Something to keep in mind is that discharge can vary slightly in brightness and color, even on the same print job. This is because sometimes different dye lots are shipped together from the shirt manufacturer. Discharge ink alone are what we call natural discharge, sinks into the fiber, it's just like water-based ink. This will usually reveal a warm off-white natural cotton color and is extremely soft since nothing is being added to the garment, and because you're simply modifying the fabric, the print will last as long as the shirt does. Once this shirt has removed color from the fabric, a new color can be put on top of it with water-based ink to preserve the soft feel. For instance, white water base can be printed on top, creating a very vibrant but soft print. Overall, this ink is an excellent choice for softness and longevity. However, it's very difficult to work with and your screen printer may not offer it.
