Did you know that one of the earliest armed uprisings against British rule in India happened decades before the famous 1857 revolt? The Paika Bidroh of 1817 was a major rebellion in present-day Odisha against the British East India Company. The Paikas were traditional warrior militias of the Khurda Kingdom who served the king as soldiers and administrators. In return, they were granted rent-free lands known as “nishkar jagirs” and enjoyed social and political privileges within the kingdom. When the British East India Company conquered the Khurda Kingdom in 1803, these rights were taken away. The Paikas lost their land grants, status, and traditional role in governance. Heavy taxation, new land revenue policies, and the disruption of the old political order created deep resentment among the people. In 1817, under the leadership of Bakshi Jagabandhu, the hereditary military commander of the Khurda kingdom, the Paikas rose in rebellion against British rule. The uprising spread across several parts of Odisha as peasants, zamindars, and tribal communities joined the resistance. Although the British eventually suppressed the revolt, the Paika Bidroh remains a powerful symbol of early resistance against colonial rule in India. Many historians consider it one of the earliest organized armed struggles against the British.
